A government art school founded in 1887. It was established, out of the rising nationalist movement, to protect and foster traditional art. Tenshin Okakura and Fenollosa were among those who prepared its founding. After the two original courses in Japanese painting and wood carving, courses in Western painting and design were added in 1896. In 1947 it merged with the Tokyo School of Music to form the national Tokyo University of the Arts.
