A private art school founded in 1909 at Shimotomisakacho, Koishikawa, Tokyo (now Koishikawa) by the Japanese-style painter Gyokusho Kawabata. It was set up at first to train specialists in Japanese painting. After Gyokusho’s death in 1913 a Western painting section was added in 1914. The school burned down in an air raid in 1945 and closed, but it produced many artists who went on to be active in the art world.
