The name of what is now Kyoto City University of Arts between 1894 and 1945. It traces its origin to the Kyoto Prefectural Painting School, founded in 1880 through the efforts of Bairei Kono and others, and after several changes of name became the Kyoto Municipal School of Arts and Crafts in 1894. In 1969 the Municipal Junior College of Music was absorbed as a faculty of music, and it became the present Kyoto City University of Arts.
