A public university of the arts, at Oe Kutsukakecho, Nishikyo-ku, Kyoto. It traces its origin to the Kyoto Prefectural Painting School, founded in 1880 through the efforts of Bairei Kono and others; by way of the Kyoto Municipal Special School of Painting (1909) and the Kyoto Municipal Special School of Fine Arts (1945), it began in 1950 as Kyoto Municipal University of Fine Arts. In 1969 the Municipal Junior College of Music was absorbed as a faculty of music and the university took its present name. It has two faculties, fine arts and music.
