The name of the University of Tokyo between 1897 and 1947. A national comprehensive university under the old system. The University of Tokyo was founded in 1877 as the first government university in Japan; it became the Imperial University in 1886, Tokyo Imperial University in 1897, and the University of Tokyo again in 1947. In the imperial university years it had five colleges: law, medicine, engineering, letters and science.
