He graduated from the Tokyo School of Fine Arts and studied under Eikyu Matsuoka. In the hard years after the war he came upon a life of Gauguin, which gave him the starting point of his own work. Holding his colour in check, he created an inward and poetic pictorial space, and showed works on the themes of the person, the family, nature and the universe. Recipient of the Order of Culture; Person of Cultural Merit; member of the Japan Art Academy; adviser to the Nitten.
