Graduated from the Japanese painting course of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts and studied under Hoshun Yamaguchi. His subjects range widely — figures, religious works, birds and flowers, landscape — and he is especially known for carp. Well versed in the study of the classics, he worked on the sliding-door paintings at Narita-san Shinsho-ji and the wall paintings of the Shotoku Taishi hall. He received the Award for Cultural Merit, the Minister of Education’s Prize, the Japan Art Academy Prize and the Order of Culture, and is a member of the Academy.
