A Japanese-style painter representative of the Showa era. Born in Yokohama, he moved with his family to Kobe at the age of three. Before leaving middle school he had resolved to become a painter, and entered the Japanese painting course of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts. He graduated in 1931, went on to the research course and studied under Somei Yuki. After completing the course in 1933 he studied in Berlin. In 1947 he received a special prize at the third Nitten, and from then on resolved to stand as a landscape painter. His true ground was the plain, quiet landscape carrying a deep spirituality. He received the Order of Culture in 1969.
