Gallery Shukado is an art dealer in Ginza 6-chome, Tokyo.

We show and sell fine Japanese art from the Edo period to the present day. Every work is chosen by our director, whose eye for Japanese painting and classical calligraphy is well regarded in the trade.

Our focus remains Japanese painting — both nihonga and Western-style — that carries on the Japanese tradition. Much of this heritage is overlooked even in Japan, and we hope to help more people rediscover it and enjoy the depth of skill and spirit it holds.

A word from our director
Chiaki Tanaka, President, Shukado Co., Ltd.
Chiaki Tanaka, President, Shukado Co., Ltd.

I am Chiaki Tanaka, president of Shukado. I am the second generation at Shukado, and the third generation of the Tanaka family to deal in art.

I grew up surrounded by art and old calligraphy, but as a young man my interest was almost entirely in film. Once I began working in art, I realised how much I had missed by not knowing this rich world sooner.

Drawing on my earlier careers — as a systems engineer, and before that in manual work (filmmaking included, perhaps) — I want Shukado to be an art company that is thoughtful, expressive and warm: not a one-man show, but a place where every member of staff works and serves with heart.
