He graduated from the Tokyo School of Fine Arts in 1948. In 1959 he travelled about Europe by motorcycle and studied in France, where he became friendly with Tsuguharu Foujita and others. In 1971 “The Sorrow of Misao the Goze: from a Diary of the Goze of Echigo” received an honourable mention at the fourteenth Yasui Prize exhibition. In 1973 he received the Japan Essayists’ Club Prize for essays on the goze, in which he drew a spiritual world of his own. Through his “Goze series” he made known the blind women musicians who sang to the shamisen in the deep snow of the Tsugaru region.
