He moved to Tokyo in 1919 and attended the Aoibashi Institute of Western Painting. In 1922 he entered the Western painting course of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts and studied in Saburosuke Okada’s class, graduating in 1927. From 1930 he continued drawing for three years at Bango Kobayashi’s Dotan Institute. In 1933 “Scene at the Shell-Roasting Place” was selected for the fourteenth Teiten at his first attempt. In 1936 he took part in founding the Shusen Art Association. In 1946 “Blazing Noon” received a special prize at the second Nitten. In 1949 he formed the Rikkikai with Hisashi Suda and others. His manner moved from the pastoral and lyrical of about 1955 towards quiet landscapes of the mind in a sense of colour all his own.
