Sugiyama Yasushi
After graduating from the Tokyo School of Fine Arts he studied under Eikyu Matsuoka. Selected repeatedly for the Teiten, he came to the fore. In 1934 he formed the Ruso Gasha with Kyujin Yamamoto and others. After the war he showed at the Nitten one work after another, and his close construction and powers of description were always talked of. His motifs range widely — the scenes of Egypt, nature, people, animals — but through a quiet of his own he expressed the permanence of being. Member of the Japan Art Academy and adviser to the Nitten. Person of Cultural Merit; recipient of the Order of Culture.
