He graduated from the Western painting course of the Kyoto Municipal Special School of Fine Arts (now Kyoto City University of Arts) and completed its graduate course in Japanese painting. While a student he was struck by a book of paintings by the Qing painter Jin Nong, gave up oil painting and entered the way of ink painting. He is unaffiliated.
