Born the fourth son of a wealthy sake-brewing family in Kurume, Fukuoka Prefecture. He graduated top of the fisheries department of the faculty of agriculture at Tokyo Imperial University. Though much was expected of him, he chose the way of the painter. He formed a manner on his own and pursued realism throughout.
