Among the intangible cultural products of Japan — theatre, music, craft technique and the rest — the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology designates those of particular importance for their historical or artistic value as Important Intangible Cultural Properties under the Law for the Protection of Cultural Properties, and at the same time certifies their holders. Those holders are called Living National Treasures.
