From Toyama Prefecture; his art name was Kuan. Without a particular master he made pottery at Shibuya in Tokyo, at Ogawa in Saitama Prefecture and at Kanazawa. He built a kiln at Yase in Kyoto and pursued his research there. Travelling in China and Korea, he became the first in Japan to succeed in making leaf-pattern tenmoku. In 1939 he received a silver medal at the Paris World Exposition. In 1955 he was designated a holder of an Important Intangible Cultural Property for the technique of iron-glazed ceramics, and became a director of the Japan Kogei Association. In 1956 he became chairman of the Yase kiln. Medal with Purple Ribbon, 1963; Order of the Sacred Treasure, Third Class, 1968.
