He was trained by his grandfather, Miwa Kyusetsu VIII, and on his father’s retirement in 1927 succeeded as the tenth of the line. While studying Momoyama tea ceramics, he also studied the Goryeo tea bowls from which Hagi ware descends, and worked on the white glaze particular to Hagi, producing with his younger brother the beautiful white glaze known as “Kyusetsu white”. In 1942 he formed the Karahine-kai with Hanjiro Kawakita, Toyo Kaneshige and Toyozo Arakawa. The following year he was designated a holder of the techniques of Hagi ware; in 1956 he was designated an Intangible Cultural Property of Yamaguchi Prefecture for Hagi ware, and was selected for the third Japan Traditional Art Crafts Exhibition. He received the Medal with Purple Ribbon. In 1970, at the age of seventy-five, he was named a Living National Treasure, and in 1973 received the Order of the Rising Sun, Fourth Class.
