Chen Pei-Yi (陳珮怡) was born in Taiwan in 1984. After graduating from the Department of Visual Arts Education at National Pingtung University, she completed a master's degree in fine art at Tunghai University, Taiwan, in 2011. Working in jiaocai (kosaiga) — painting with mineral pigments bound in animal glue — she paints the cats she lives with, as well as figures.
She exhibited widely in Taiwan while still a student, including at art fairs such as ART TAIPEI. In 2017 she made her debut in Japan in a two-person exhibition with Yasunari Ikenaga at Gallery SHUKADO, where her cat paintings sold out. Her first book of paintings, All I Need Is a Cat (Seigensha), was published in 2018. She has held solo exhibitions at Gallery SHUKADO in 2018, 2020 and 2021, and at GALLERY SCENA. in 2023 ("I shall be unique in all the world"). In autumn 2026 the Hirano Museum of Art in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka, presents "All I Need Is a Cat", her first solo exhibition at a museum in Japan.
Layering mineral pigments on silk, she renders the softness of a cat's fur and the woven patterns of carpets with an almost sculptural depth. Freeing cats from the idea that they are simply "cute" and painting them just as they are, she is the painter we at SHUKADO call "the finest cat painter in the East."

Born in Guangdong Province, China, in 1994. Enrolled in the doctoral programme at Tokyo Zokei University (2022–2026), and from 2026 a teaching assistant in its sculpture department. She began exhibiting as a sculptor from a base in Japan in 2021. Working mainly in wood, she faces the material directly without preparatory drawings, taking figures and animals as her motifs. She currently works chiefly in Japan, Taiwan and China.
