In 1908, determined to become a painter, he moved to Tokyo and entered the Angado studio run by Fuko Matsumoto. At the thirteenth Tatsumi Gakai in 1913 he showed under the name Kumei and drew attention with “Four Rustic Subjects”, which took a third prize; the following year he joined the Sekiyo-kai, formed by young painters around Shiko Imamura, and changed his name to Seiju. The Sekiyo-kai’s activity ended with Shiko’s death in 1916, but its members continued to attract attention as the Meguro group. At the third Inten in 1915 he showed “Eight Views of Kanazawa”, of which “Night Rain at Koizumi” was selected; “Kitchen Garden” was selected for the fifth Inten. Moving to Sayama, he built a dense, realist manner with the landscape of Musashino as his subject. With “Ekado Port, Izumo”, shown at the eighth Inten in 1921, he was recognised and elected a member of the Japan Art Institute. He was active at the Inten thereafter, up to “Handscroll of Insects and Fish” in 1931. He died in 1933 at the age of forty-two.
