Japanese-style painter. His given name was Atsushi and his courtesy name Shikei; he also used the names Kogai and Gyokko Gyojin. He studied nanga under Yukoku Noguchi. In 1902 he founded the Kansui-kai studio. In 1932 he became a member of the Imperial Art Academy. In 1939 he showed “Flowers on a Spring Evening” at the New York World’s Fair, and thereafter showed repeatedly at the Shin-Bunten. He left many fine realist works, among them cherry blossom under a hazy moon painted in ink alone. He went on to form the Japan Nanga Institute, the Hakuju-kai and the Mumei-kai, and was active as a senior figure of the modern nanga world, contributing greatly to its advancement. He became an Imperial Household Artist in 1944 and received the Order of Culture in 1958. In 1961 he was made an honorary citizen of Hagi.
