Born at Onoda in Yamaguchi Prefecture. He was called up on graduating from the Japan Art School, and after about five years’ service returned and began to show at the Nika exhibition. He went on painting the old castles “surrounded by forest and water” of France and other parts of Europe; his quiet landscapes, made of clear composition and pale tones, are full of poetry, and he created a manner of his own that joined Japanese and Western painting. Besides high regard at the Nika exhibition, where he received the Special Prize and the Gold Prize, he received the Seiji Togo Prize, the Prime Minister’s Award and the Minister of Education’s Art Encouragement Prize.
