On moving to Tokyo in 1953 he studied under Kiyonaga Ito and attended the Asagaya Institute of Western Painting. In 1954 “By the Window” was selected for the tenth Nitten at his first attempt. In 1957 he began to live independently. In 1980 “Adorning” received the Prime Minister’s Award at the Hakujitsu exhibition. In 1987 he became a member of the Nitten, and later received the Nitten Members’ Prize and the Prime Minister’s Award. In 1998 “Black Fan” received the Japan Art Academy Prize, and he became a member of the Academy. In 2001 he became secretary-general of the Nitten. He is now a standing committee member of the Hakujitsukai and a committee member of the Japan Artists Association.
