After graduating from the Ibaraki Normal School he moved to Tokyo and studied at the Kumaoka Institute of Western Painting. From the first Tokokai exhibition in 1933 his work was selected, and he showed there thereafter. Before the war he often painted folk performing arts and dolls; after the war he showed series of nudes and figures. Journeys to Europe and Southeast Asia turned him towards landscape. “Kurokawa Noh” received the Minister of Education’s Prize at the ninth Nitten. Taking Rouault as his model, he laid bright colours one over another for a weighty matière.
