She moved to Tokyo in 1921 to study under Saburosuke Okada and attended the Hongo Institute of Western Painting. In 1922 she transferred to the Women’s School of Fine Arts. In 1925 she won a prize at the Shunyo exhibition with “Portrait” and other works. After the war, in 1946, she founded the Association of Women Painters with Yoneko Saeki and others. In 1968 she settled in Cagnes in the south of France, and in 1969 founded the women’s group exhibition “Ushio”; from about this time she also began to work as a landscape painter. A leading figure among women painters, she did much to establish the position of women in the art world. Her weighty touch carries a deep spirituality, and she painted flowers as her motif throughout her life.
