One of the writers who represent the Meiji era. Born in 1867 in Iyo Province (now Ehime Prefecture). He left Tokyo Imperial University in 1892 and joined a newspaper; he first wrote fiction, and later turned to haiku. He helped bring out the magazine “Hototogisu” and brought on Kyoshi Takahama and others. He serialised “Letters to a Poet of Waka” in the newspaper “Nippon” and worked energetically for the renewal of the tanka, but after a long illness died at the age of thirty-five.
