A senior pupil of Gyokudo Kawai. He won prizes repeatedly at the Teiten and Bunten, and formed the Boshin-kai among Gyokudo’s pupils. With Shinsui Ito and others he formed the Jitsugetsu-sha. He studied the traditional Japanese arts widely — nanga, the Chinese classics, ink painting and yamato-e — and, bringing to them a modern sense of colour of his own, left outstanding work across a wide range of subjects: landscape, birds and flowers, figures and Buddhist painting. He was chairman of the Japan Art and Craft Control Association, a judge of the Teiten, a councillor of the Nitten, an adviser to the Jitsugetsu-sha, and a member of the Japan Art Academy.
