In 1949 he studied under the late Suisho Nishiyama. From his first selection for the sixth Nitten in 1950 he received many prizes. In 1969 he became a councillor of the Nitten, and in 1988 he left it. He is known for an ink painting of his own making that expresses the energy of the natural world together with an Eastern sense of impermanence, and is now among the painters who represent Japan. In recent years he has held the first solo exhibition in China by a Japanese artist.
