He studied under Tokaku Morimoto of the Shijo school, who gave him the name “Hako”. In 1901 he entered the Kyoto Municipal School of Arts and Crafts (now Kyoto City University of Arts), and afterwards worked on copying old paintings and studying Buddhist painting at the Tokyo Imperial Museum and elsewhere. He continued to show with the Kokuga Sosaku Kyokai, formed in 1918 by rising painters in Kyoto, but withdrew from the art world after it disbanded in 1928. In 1936 he became a professor at the Kyoto Municipal Special School of Painting and taught the younger generation. In his last years he gave himself to the copying of the wall paintings of the Kondo at Horyu-ji, commissioned by the Ministry of Education, and left fine works in ink.
