Date Masamune (1567-1636) was the 1st feudal lord of Sendai Domain. Date Terumune (the 16th)'s lawful son. He lost his right eyesight in his childhood because of smallpox. Served Hideyoshi and Ieyasu, and contributed to politics in domain after foundation of Tokugawa Bakufu. Excelled at poem, Noh, and calligraphy. Also known as a cosmopolitan who sent envoy to Europe.
