Ukiyo-e artist. Born the son of Hashimoto Naohiro, a retainer of the Takada domain (now Joetsu, Niigata Prefecture) stationed in Edo. His given name was Naoyoshi; he also signed Yoshu with different characters. He studied under Utagawa Kuniyoshi, then Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III), and then Toyohara Kunichika. He excelled at bijinga, and is known for scenes of life in the inner palace of Edo Castle and for pictures of women in the manners of the Meiji enlightenment. His works include the set of thirty-six True Beauties and The Okawa Ferry.
