Familiar with tanka from childhood, she published her first collection, “Midaregami”, in 1901; its bold expression had a great influence on the worlds of poetry and letters. In the same year she married Tekkan Yosano, head of the Shinshisha and founder of the magazine “Myojo”. She continued to publish energetically, and at the same time worked on classical studies and modern translations, including “The Tale of Genji” and the poems of Izumi Shikibu. Among her best-known works is “Kimi shinitamou koto nakare” (Thou Shalt Not Die).
