Ukiyo-e artist. He also signed Kachoro, Ichiosai and Toshunro. He entered the studio of Toyohara Chikanobu and made designs for padded battledore pictures, then became a pupil of Kunisada I (Toyokuni III). He produced a great many large-head actor prints and showed real power in them. In later years he made many actor likenesses in three-quarter length that held to the traditional manner, and devised compositions setting a single half-length actor across a triptych. His faces keep something of the battledore manner.
