A painter of the later Edo period. His father, Tani Rokukoku, was a retainer of the Tayasu house and a poet in Chinese. He first studied painting under Kato Bunrei of the Kano school and Watanabe Gentai of the Nagasaki school, and learned landscape from Suzuki Fuyo. On a foundation of copying old paintings and drawing from life he added the Southern and Northern schools and Western-style painting, arriving at a manner of his own. Recognised by Matsudaira Sadanobu, he took part in compiling the Shuko jisshu and drew its illustrations, gaining social standing and becoming a leading figure of the literati painting world in Edo. From his studio came fine painters such as Watanabe Kazan and Tachihara Kyosho.
