Born into a family of Buddhist sculptors in Soma. He studied under Choun Yamazaki, and in 1922 went to France to learn carving under Bourdelle. In 1936 he became a member of the Imperial Art Academy. In his later years he kept a studio at Myoshin-ji in Kyoto and made many Buddhist sculptures and sculptures of small animals. He is known for the statue of Wake no Kiyomaro (1940, near the Imperial Palace at Takebashi) and for “Tennyo (Magokoro)”, completed in 1960 after some ten years’ work (Mitsukoshi main store, Nihombashi).
