For some thirty-six years, from the age of forty to the age of seventy-five, he taught French at schools across Japan, and alongside that published poetry and made prints. He had studied painting under Ishii Hakutei in Paris; his sketches were used in magazines, and a publisher who saw them brought out a set of postcards. As for ukiyo-e, his mother had inherited a collection of Hiroshige’s One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, so he had grown up with it. He showed his sketches at the Doi print shop, the family business of one of his pupils, and that led to their publication as shin-hanga. His best-known work is the series Views of Tokyo, of twenty-four prints.
