After leaving Tokyo Metropolitan Sixth Middle School in 1943 he studied under Nanpu Katayama. In 1949 his work was selected for the thirty-fourth Inten at his first attempt. In the 1960s “Abandoned Ship”, “Monument to Birds” and “Sea of Trees” received the Japan Art Institute Prize and the Taikan Prize. From 1979 he served as a councillor of the Japan Art Institute. He received the Minister of Education’s Art Encouragement Prize for New Artists and the Japan Art Academy Prize. In 1987 he became a professor at Tama Art University.
