Painter, born in Edo. His family name was Okazawa and he was commonly called Genshichi. Between the Hoei (1704–11) and Shotoku (1711–16) eras he organised the Kaigetsudo workshop and turned out painted bijinga in quantity. Ando himself worked only in paint, but at a time when the print had not yet fully found its own identity, the figures he devised became the model for the prints his pupils made. In 1714 his closeness to the wealthy merchant Togaya Zenroku implicated him in the Ejima affair, and he was banished to Izu Oshima; he was pardoned and returned to Edo after 1716, and the Kaigetsudo school broke up at that point. He ran the picture shop Kaigetsudo. His pupils included Anchi, Dohan and Doshin, and he also influenced Miyagawa Choshun and Okumura Masanobu. His manner of bijinga — stylised figures drawn in lines that swell and taper sharply, in boldly patterned robes — had a great effect on artists of other schools as well.
