Painter in the Western manner. Born in Kochi Prefecture. He came to Tokyo in 1891 and entered Fudosha, the painting school of Koyama Shotaro. He later took part in founding the Taiheiyo Gakai, and taught younger artists at its research institute and at the Taiheiyo Art School. He showed mainly at the official salons, and from the Showa era he also published woodblock prints. In both oil and print he is best known for harbours and ships in bright colour. Among his prints, the series Ten Types of Female Nudes is the best known.
