Printmaker and sculptor. He entered the oil painting course of the Tokyo Fine Arts School (now Tokyo University of the Arts) at sixteen, ahead of his year. After the war he showed with the Jiyu Bijutsuka Kyokai and won a high international reputation. He worked chiefly in copperplate, and preferred to set out grave subjects — the absurdity of human society, the dark corners of the human mind — with black humour, on dark and inorganic surfaces. He won a prize at the Lugano International Print Biennial, was made an honorary member of the print department of the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, and received the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Chevalier) from the French government.
