He studied under Kyujin Yamamoto and Seihyo Tanaka. His well-ordered paintings of the old capital through the seasons, in which gold pigment is used with skill, are highly regarded. The Sumio Goto Museum of Art stands at Furano in Hokkaido. He received the Prime Minister’s Award, the Minister of Education’s Prize and the Taikan Prize at the Inten, among others. Professor at Tokyo University of the Arts; councillor of the Japan Art Institute.
