English painter and printmaker. He studied art in England and France, and in Europe painted mainly peasants. In 1913 Bartlett travelled to India, Ceylon and China, and called at Japan on the way. There he took his watercolour sketches to Watanabe Shozaburo, the shin-hanga publisher, and began making woodblock prints. The following year Watanabe issued twenty-one new prints by Bartlett: six Japanese landscapes together with Indian subjects. He visited Japan again in 1919, and made sixteen further prints with Watanabe.
