Hiroki Kakinuma paints a world of his own in which other species and human beings, the uncanny and the everyday, run into one another. The strange creatures that seem to be part chicken and part human return again and again in his work, and they stay with you.

They are more than invention. Each has a character and a presence, as though something had taken up residence inside it. Chief among them is the figure he calls Chicken Sapiens, his best-known motif and a favourite with many.

Chicken Sapiens has now been made as a three-dimensional figure for the first time. It gives Kakinuma’s vision another kind of life, and lets far more people meet this creature close up.

The figure was released early at an art fair in the Philippines in February 2025, where the whole local allocation sold out.

At Shukado we are showing the figure together with new paintings.

【フィギュアでのこだわりは？】
とくに力を入れたのが顔の造形です。普段、チキンサピエンスを描く際に気を配っているのが「捉えどころのない表情」です。それを立体作品でも表現できるよう、下絵からこだわりました。
また、支えなしで自立するところもポイントです。飾る際はフィギュアスタンドなどがあると良いですが、一応自力でも立ちます。

【作る工程で大変だったところは？】
造形全般です。平面作品を立体に起こすためには、形の解釈を変える必要がありました。例えば、普段は油絵具の粘性を活かして描いている羽にも、立体となると1枚ずつに具体的な造形が求められます。どこから見ても違和感のないものに仕上げるために、制作はいつも手探りでした。3Dデザイナーさんにも辛抱強くご対応頂き、満足のいくものが出来上がりました。
