Sengai Gibon
Born in 1750 at Ono in the village of Takano, Mugi district, Mino province (present-day Takano, Mugegawa), the son of Ito Jinpachi, a poor farmer.

At eleven he was ordained under the priest Kuin at Seitaiji in Mino, and at forty he became the twenty-third abbot of Shofukuji in Hakata.

Known as Sengai of Hakata, he never flattered the powerful, and from a position entirely his own produced a great many witty, unfettered works. He left many masterpieces in an ink style close to haiga.

His Buddhist name was Gibon. He died in 1837 at the age of eighty-eight.
