Shibata Zeshin (1807-1891) was a lacquer artist and painter. He studied lacquer technique under Koma Kansai and learned painting from Suzuki Nanrei and Okamoto Toyohiko. His light, free and witty paintings and tradition-based realistic crafts are highly appreciated overseas as well.
