artKYOTO 2019 is held at Nijo Castle. Kyoto, which holds it, has drawn increasing attention as a city where nature and human making have long been at ease with one another.

Aiming at a display worthy of the place, in which people and nature, the present and the past, are brought together, the Shukado booth takes sen — the immortal — as its theme: Nihonga by Shihori Hattori, a contemporary installation by Takuro Nomura, and old paintings from the Shukado collection.

市中を後に山中に住むことを決めた我々でありますが、何をどうしてそのようなものに惹かれ移り住みを決意したかは、人知の超えるはかり知ることができないものへの憧憬でありまして、その超越した存在を「仙」とすることとしました。

この「仙」を考えるにつれ、より生かされているという感覚が増し、人間の力の及ぶところの狭さを自覚します。しかしながら、わたしたちが捕らわれている、「仙」というものに対して慈しんだり距離を測ったりすることは恐らく信仰と芸術活動にて成し得るとも思います。Art KYOTO 2019 においてはそのことを現わせる展示を考えたく「人、山、仙」をテーマといたしました。
