A. The hanging scroll grew up as something to hang in a tokonoma, the alcove of a Japanese room, and we often hear now that in a flat there is nowhere to hang one.

But it need not be a tokonoma. We have seen it done by driving a nail into an ordinary wall, hanging the scroll from it and laying a small piece of tatami on the floor beneath. A board would do as well.

If you would rather not have the scroll against the bare wall, you might hang a cloth first and the scroll over it. A draught will lift it, though, so either make a three-sided recess in the manner of a tokonoma, or pin the bottom of the mounting down with an insect pin.
