Trace writing back to its origin and you arrive at the oracle-bone script of China, before the common era. Writing became sho, calligraphy, an art in its own right, and spread through China, Japan and the wider world. In postwar Japan it was carried along by the avant-garde, and Inoue Yuichi became its towering figure.
Half a century on, calligraphy faces its next challenge. Tradition or invention, craft or expression: in an art world pulling in many directions at once, where does calligraphy go?
“ZERO Calligraphy” — Rooted in tradition yet unconfined by it, Koun Nangaku approaches calligraphy with a boundless spirit.
Hisashi Yamamoto, by contrast, has reexamined the very foundations of “writing,” forging a uniquely personal path.
Though their expressions may appear to stand at opposite poles, both artists return to a shared “zero point” — a place to reconsider the essence of their calligraphy.
This will be a moment where the origins of writing and their contemporary visions converge.
