Q. How should I look after a framed painting?

A. There is no need to be anxious about it. Not too humid, not too dry — in short, if you show and store the work in a space where a person can live comfortably, it will be well.

⬛ Framed nihonga

A frame keeps out dust well, but if damp gathers inside there is a danger of mould. As with a hanging scroll, it is best hung and stored away from damp. And direct sunlight, of course, is to be avoided as far as you can.

Oil painting stands up to wear better than nihonga, but too much light will still tell on the pigments, so it is as well to change what is hanging at least once a year.
