Our congratulations to the Koraiya line on the succession of three generations to their stage names. As a gallery in Ginza, a quarter of theatres, Shukado has often shown ukiyo-e actor prints. To mark this occasion — a triple succession in the Koraiya line, the first in thirty-seven years — we show actor prints of the Koraiya actors, together with related works such as Kaidomaru by Matsumoto Kintaro, now Ichikawa Somegoro VIII. 平安時代の優れた歌人である三十六歌仙の和歌とともに、関連のある芝居の登場人物を描いたシリーズ物の1枚。
横向きで見得を切る五代目松本幸四郎を描く。五代目松本幸四郎はその高い鼻に特徴から「鼻高幸四郎」と呼ばれ、浮世絵では横顔で描かれることが多かった。実悪を得意とし、五代目が舞台で見得をするとあまりの怖さに子供が泣き出すとの言い伝えもあった。

今回の襲名で二代目松本白鸚となる九代目松本幸四郎丈を描いた作品。
歌舞伎座で1991年5月に上演された｢暫｣を取材したもの。弦屋光溪は祖父が洋画家の中澤弘光、父は同じく洋画家の藤川光次。サラリーマンをしていたが、国立劇場で「浮世柄比翼稲妻」を見たことをきっかけに役者絵の制作を決意。木版の大首絵シリーズを生み出している。
