The westernising of Japan in the Meiji era produced a new kind of ukiyo-e, the kaika-e or picture of the new civilisation.

It was through ukiyo-e, as a medium, that the opening of the railways and the new manners reached the public.

Centred on the railway, the great symbol of the new age, the exhibition shows kaika-e and Yokohama prints.
